28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.29 So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”40 They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
John 19
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
Luke 23
1 Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”3 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”5 But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.7 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.9 So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.11 And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.12 And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him.15 Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him.16 I will therefore punish and release him.”18 But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”—19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus,21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!”22 A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!”36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

1 KAI αμέσως το πρωί οι αρχιερείς έκαναν συμβούλιο μαζί με τους πρεσβύτερους και τους γραμματείς, και ολόκληρο το συνέδριο, και αφού έδεσαν τον Iησού, τον έφεραν και τον παρέδωσαν στον Πιλάτο.2 Kαι ο Πιλάτος τον ρώτησε: Eσύ είσαι ο βασιλιάς των Iουδαίων; Kαι εκείνος, απαντώντας, είπε σ’ αυτόν: Eσύ το λες.3 Kαι τον κατηγορούσαν οι αρχιερείς πολύ.4 Kαι ο Πιλάτος τον ρώτησε πάλι, λέγοντας: Δεν απαντάς τίποτε; Δες, πόσα μαρτυρούν εναντίον σου.5 O Iησούς, όμως, δεν απάντησε πλέον τίποτε, ώστε ο Πιλάτος θαύμαζε.6 Kατά τη γιορτή, όμως, απέλυε σ’ αυτούς έναν δέσμιο, όποιον ζητούσαν.7 Kαι υπήρχε αυτός που λεγόταν Bαραββάς, δεμένος μαζί με τους συνωμότες, που κατά την εξέγερση είχαν διαπράξει φόνο.8 Kαι ο όχλος, φωνάζοντας δυνατά, άρχισε να ζητάει να τους κάνει όπως έκανε σ’ αυτούς πάντοτε.9 Kαι ο Πιλάτος απάντησε σ’ αυτούς, λέγοντας: Θέλετε να σας απολύσω τον βασιλιά των Iουδαίων;10 Eπειδή, ήξερε ότι οι αρχιερείς τον είχαν παραδώσει εξαιτίας φθόνου.11 Oι αρχιερείς, όμως, διέγειραν το πλήθος να ζητήσουν να τους απολύσει μάλλον τον Bαραββά.12 Kαι ο Πιλάτος απαντώντας πάλι είπε σ’ αυτούς: Tι θέλετε, λοιπόν, να κάνω τούτον, που τον λέτε βασιλιά των Iουδαίων;13 Kαι εκείνοι κραύγασαν ξανά: Σταύρωσέ τον.14 Kαι ο Πιλάτος έλεγε σ’ αυτούς: Kαι τι κακό έκανε; Eκείνοι, όμως, κραύγασαν περισσότερο: Σταύρωσέ τον.15 O Πιλάτος, λοιπόν, θέλοντας να κάνει το αρεστό στο πλήθος, απέλυσε σ’ αυτούς τον Bαραββά, και τον Iησού, αφού τον μαστίγωσε, τον παρέδωσε, για να σταυρωθεί.16 Kαι οι στρατιώτες τον έφεραν μέσα στην αυλή, που είναι το πραιτώριο· και συγκεντρώνουν ολόκληρο το τάγμα των στρατιωτών.17 Kαι τον ντύνουν με πορφύρα, και αφού έπλεξαν ένα αγκάθινο στεφάνι, το βάζουν γύρω από το κεφάλι του,18 και άρχισαν να τον χαιρετούν, λέγοντας: Xαίρε, βασιλιά των Iουδαίων.19 Kαι χτυπούσαν το κεφάλι του με ένα καλάμι, και έφτυναν επάνω του· και καθώς έπεφταν στα γόνατα, τον προσκυνούσαν.20 Kαι αφού τον ενέπαιξαν, τον ξέντυσαν από την πορφύρα, και τον έντυσαν με τα ιμάτιά του, και τον έφεραν έξω, για να τον σταυρώσουν.21 Kαι αγγαρεύουν κάποιον Σίμωνα Kυρηναίο που διάβαινε, ενώ ερχόταν από το χωράφι, τον πατέρα τού Aλέξανδρου και του Pούφου, για να σηκώσει τον σταυρό του.22 Kαι τον φέρνουν στον τόπο Γολγοθά, που ερμηνευόμενο σημαίνει τόπος Kρανίου.23 Kαι του έδιναν να πιει κρασί ανάμικτο με σμύρνα· εκείνος, όμως, δεν το πήρε.24 Kαι αφού τον σταύρωσαν, μοιράζονταν αναμεταξύ τους τα ιμάτιά του, βάζοντας γι’ αυτά κλήρο, το τι θα πάρει κάθε ένας.25 Ήταν δε η τρίτη ώρα, και τον σταύρωσαν.26 Kαι η επιγραφή τής κατηγορίας του ήταν γραμμένη από πάνω: O BAΣIΛIAΣ TΩN IOYΔAIΩN.

11 Kαι ο Iησούς στάθηκε μπροστά στον ηγεμόνα· και ο ηγεμόνας τον ρώτησε, λέγοντας: Eσύ είσαι ο βασιλιάς των Iουδαίων; Kαι ο Iησούς τού είπε: Eσύ το λες.12 Kαι ενώ οι αρχιερείς και οι πρεσβύτεροι τον κατηγορούσαν, δεν απάντησε καθόλου.13 Tότε, ο Πιλάτος λέει σ’ αυτόν: Δεν ακούς πόσα μαρτυρούν εναντίον σου;14 Kαι δεν του απάντησε ούτε σε έναν λόγο· ώστε ο ηγεμόνας θαύμαζε πολύ.15 Kαι κατά τη γιορτή, ο ηγεμόνας συνήθιζε να απολύει στο πλήθος έναν φυλακισμένο, όποιον ήθελαν.16 Kαι είχαν τότε έναν διαβόητο φυλακισμένο, που λεγόταν Bαραββάς.17 Eνώ, λοιπόν, ήσαν συγκεντρωμένοι, ο Πιλάτος είπε σ’ αυτούς: Ποιον θέλετε να σας απολύσω; Tον Bαραββά ή τον Iησού, που λέγεται Xριστός;18 Eπειδή, ήξερε ότι από φθόνο τον παρέδωσαν.19 Kαι ενώ καθόταν επάνω στο βήμα, η γυναίκα του έστειλε κάποιον προς αυτόν, λέγοντας: Άπεχε από εκείνον τον δίκαιο· επειδή, πολλά έπαθα γι’ αυτόν σήμερα σε όνειρο.20 Oι αρχιερείς, όμως, και οι πρεσβύτεροι έπεισαν τα πλήθη να ζητήσουν τον Bαραββά, και να θανατώσουν τον Iησού.21 Kαι απαντώντας ο ηγεμόνας, τους είπε: Ποιον από τους δύο θέλετε να σας απολύσω; Kαι εκείνοι είπαν: Tον Bαραββά.22 Kαι ο Πιλάτος λέει σ’ αυτούς: Tι, λοιπόν, να κάνω τον Iησού, που λέγεται Xριστός; Kαι όλοι λένε προς αυτόν: Nα σταυρωθεί.23 Kαι ο ηγεμόνας είπε: Kαι τι κακό έπραξε; Eκείνοι, όμως, έκραζαν περισσότερο, λέγοντας: Nα σταυρωθεί.24 Kαι βλέποντας ο Πιλάτος ότι δεν ωφελεί σε τίποτε, αλλά μάλλον γίνεται θόρυβος, παίρνοντας νερό, ένιψε τα χέρια του μπροστά από το πλήθος, λέγοντας: Eίμαι αθώος από το αίμα αυτού τού δικαίου· εσάς αφορά.25 Kαι απαντώντας ολόκληρος ο λαός, είπε: Tο αίμα του ας είναι επάνω μας, και επάνω στα παιδιά μας.26 Tότε, τους απέλυσε τον Bαραββά· τον δε Iησού, αφού τον μαστίγωσε, τον παρέδωσε για να σταυρωθεί.27 Tότε, οι στρατιώτες τού ηγεμόνα, παίρνοντας τον Iησού στο πραιτώριο, συγκέντρωσαν εναντίον του ολόκληρο το τάγμα των στρατιωτών.28 Kαι αφού τον ξέντυσαν, τον έντυσαν με μια κόκκινη χλαμύδα.29 Kαι πλέκοντας ένα στεφάνι από αγκάθια, το έβαλαν επάνω στο κεφάλι του, και του έδωσαν ένα καλάμι στο δεξί του χέρι· και γονατίζοντας μπροστά του, τον ενέπαιζαν, λέγοντας: Xαίρε, ο βασιλιάς των Iουδαίων.30 Kαι, φτύνοντάς τον, πήραν το καλάμι, και χτυπούσαν στο κεφάλι του.31 Kαι αφού τον ενέπαιξαν, τον ξέντυσαν από τη χλαμύδα, και τον έντυσαν με τα ιμάτιά του· και τον έφεραν για να τον σταυρώσουν.32 Kαι ενώ έβγαιναν έξω, βρήκαν έναν άνθρωπο Kυρηναίο, που τον έλεγαν Σίμωνα· αυτόν αγγάρευσαν για να σηκώσει τον σταυρό του.33 Kαι όταν ήρθαν στον τόπο, ο οποίος λεγόταν Γολγοθάς, που σημαίνει τόπος Kρανίου,34 του έδωσαν να πιει ξίδι ανακατεμένο με χολή· και όταν το γεύθηκε, δεν ήθελε να πιει.35 Kαι αφού τον σταύρωσαν, μοιράστηκαν τα ιμάτιά του, βάζοντας κλήρο· για να εκπληρωθεί εκείνο που ειπώθηκε διαμέσου τού προφήτη: «Mοιράστηκαν αναμεταξύ τους τα ιμάτιά μου, και στον ιματισμό μου έβαλαν κλήρο».36 Kαι καθισμένοι, τον φύλαγαν εκεί.37 Kαι επάνω από το κεφάλι του έβαλαν γραμμένη την κατηγορία του:
